For boating in Kentucky, the biggest event at Lake Cumberland is the Lake Cumberland Poker Run. Friday, September 6th kicks off a weekend of fun, music and fast boats. It has become one of the nation’s most popular speedboat attractions. Most of the action occurs on Friday and Saturday, but the speedboats typically end up staying through Sunday to enjoy the Lake Cumberland area attractions. And, for Kentucky lakes it has the best straight-shot boating opportunities.

The Lake Cumberland Poker Run’s home base is State Dock Marina, known as the houseboat capital of the world. One dock becomes “Houseboat Row” for Poker Run participants with an adjacent dock showcasing their 125 speedboats.

Organizers have dubbed this poker run as the craziest and funniest ever. And, when the Party Barge gets cranked up, it will be reminiscent of Mardis Gras.

Not only did last weekend’s Lake Cumberland Poker Run mark the 10th anniversary of the event being hosted by Lake Cumberland State Dock in Jamestown, Ky., the popular poker run held on Friday and Saturday had a record number of participants with 157 registered boats.

“The event was a tremendous success overall,” said State Dock’s Bryan Horne. “We gave away $10,000 in prizes this year to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the run being at the dock. We don’t know if that’s the reason we had a record number of participants or not, but it didn’t hurt. The only downside was that we had some rain on Saturday evening that made it a little cooler—I think that kept some people away from the after-poker run activities.”

Sears said he was impressed by the variety of boats in attendance as well as some of the showstoppers from the likes of Cigarette Racing Team, DCB Performance Boats, Fountain Powerboats, Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, Skater Powerboats, Sunsation Boats and more. He also added that organizers passed out wristbands and dedicated a moment of silence to their Cumberland boating family members who died in a boating accident on Georgia’s Lake Lanier in July—Art and Melissa McMahan and Anthony and Tammy Reese.

Following the poker run, the event’s first-place winner—Scott Montgomery of Redford, Mich.—took home half of the prize purse. Brian Robertson and Corie Lovell of Elwood, Ind., had the second best hand, while Steve Truman from Goodlettsville, Tenn., came in third.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend—everything ran well and is still running after the fact,” said Denny Kirkland of Custom Performance in Somerset, Ky. “We ran in Carl Wesley’s 46 Skater on Friday and then we drove around in Robert Goforth’s Outerlimits 47 GTX. There were some real nice boats in town for the run and everything seemed to go real smooth.”

Kirkland, who maintains both of the boats he mentioned, said that Goforth’s 2004 47 GTX that was recently repainted by Stephen Miles Design got a ton of attention at the docks.

“It was the first time we put Robert’s boat in the water and it ran flawless,” Kirkland added. “I think Robert is pretty happy with how it turned out. We may freshen up the bilge and re-rig the boat over the winter, but we’ll see. For now it was just to cool to see it on the water. It’s a pretty boat.”
